I have never been to Italy but over all the ice cream in Buenos Aires is the best I have ever encountered.
The most well-known premium shop is called Freddo. They have a number of locations around the city and the ice cream is simply ravishing. I especially like the Dulce de Leche granizado (dulce de leche is like caramel, and granizado are just chocolate chips).
For my money, however, I prefer the lesser known chain called Chungo. I am a huge white chocolate fan and I can say with confidence that their while chocolate ice cream is better than at least 70% of my sexual experiences, and certainly better than Freddo's.
The Chungo I go to is located on Av. Las Heras and Rodriquez Pena. You can get a complete list of their locations from their website, www.chungo.com.ar. You can even order a kilo online, altho unless you are in Capital Federal, this probably won't be of much use to you.
Both Freddo and Chungo run $16 per kilo, a little on the pricey side, like everything here in Buenos Aires.
