This is truly the greatest place to visit in South America. This is the only place where you can still see a country with a predominately Indian population. The people are genuinely kind. Must See places include:
La Paz -- the main city for commerce, this is the largest city and it is nearly 4000 meters. Amazing view of mountain tops from the city center. This is a beautiful city, but it is difficult to navigate by foot. There are many decent bars and clubs in this city.
The Salt mines (Uyuni) -- these are excellent places to rent a 4x4 and just drive. I can remember falling asleep with a brick to the gas peddle and letting the truck steer itself (there is nothing out there for 100s of miles). Excellent Salt formations, but it is hot in the day and cold in the night. Bring plenty of alcohol and gas!
Potosi - the world's highest city was the home to the largest silver mine. You must go down into the mines and see how these guys work. It is like stepping back into the 1700s. These guys only use a shovel and pick to find silver. Unfortunately the Spanish raped and pillaged the land. Bring the workers cigarettes and coca leafs (you also need to give some to El Diablo).
Trinidad - You can see people preparing Cocaine for its trip to the US and regular jungle life. Worth the trip.
Santa Cruz - worth it to see 2 things. 1. a police man you manually changes the traffic lights. 2. the sloths (a type of bear I think) that hangs out in the trees in the park!
Corogio - Not sure if this is the name, but you can do excellent Amazon excursions from an area around here. Bring plenty of repellant and make sure you have your shots!
