La joya bella, the beautiful jewel of Bolívia, that’s how the locals call their town. One could say it’s a hidden treasure, for the charming town of Tupiza is definitely off the beaten track. With it’s sunny mediterranean climate, it’s friendly people, it’s folkore and the unique mountain views you get in it’s surroundings, Tupiza is the ideal place to get by from (or prepare for) the freezing cold nights of the nearby Salar de Uyuni (salt lakes), or to make great tours in the spectacular surroundings. Furthermore, Tupiza is an excellent place to stop for a while when you're on your way to Argentina (or vice versa). It’s also the place where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid used to hide for the law.
