Ok, the theme here is Salvador, but the coolest part of Bahia is the South, in places like Trancoso, Morro de Sao Paulo and Caraivas.
Besides that the beaches are fantastic, there are party all night long. Salvador is a very big city, too crowded, and although there are a lot of fun and very interesting places like Pelourinho, I like much more small cities in south of Bahia.
At the South of Bahia, you can be much more integrated with nature, is much more safe and you can do anything on your feet (don´t need a car or taxi). You MUST drink some Cachaça, a very strong alcoholic drink, but very traditional in Bahia. It is also popular a drink called *Capeta* (means little devil) - a mix of Cachaça, some fruit juice, *candy milk* (I don´t know how to say its in English) and *Guarana* powder - a natural exciting substance. In Bahia they say that it is an afrodisiac drink.....If you decide to try it, take it easy, because it is very strong.
Ok, if you don´t like alcohol, go with coconut water, very good in this places. If you want to go on carnival, you will have to make reservations at least 3 monhts before. The best way is to get a plane to Porto Seguro (it has an international airport there) and them go by bus to one of these cities.
You won´t find any luxury in this places. You must be prepared because the inns and restaurants are very simple. You won´t find night clubs, but there are a lot of party, always outdoors. If you like confort, is better go to Salvador, where you will find good hotels and restaurants
