I can say a lot about Sao Paulo because it's where I live. I'm brazilian, male, 29. I want to discuss a little bit about Bonies7 opinion (A huge city...but dangerous). I work in a multinational company and we receive many foreign executives every single day. Sao Paulo is a big city like any other else but we never had problems related to violence against our foreign executives. To take off rings and watches at the airport? I've never heard absurds like that...Actually some foreign executives comes to Sao Paulo for a quick trip and returns later to work here in a long term contract because they like the city.
Of course in a city of 17 million people some care is necessary.
The nightlife here is incredible! So many places to go, you can dance, listen to jazz, blues, classic, samba. The disco clubs ends at 3-4:00, then you can go somewhere to eat.
During the summer take the road to the beaches (Guaruja, Caraguatatuba, Ubatuba, Santos, Maresias, etc), just 1-1:30 hour by car, and I can assure that you will love it! If you have 2 or 3 days off go to Paraty city (3 hours by car), you will want to live there forever. During the winter go to the mountains, 2 hours by car, to Campos do Jordao city, you will find fancy places, good wine and food. And we have Carnival on February! 4 days non-stop party! Actually there are some small 1 day carnival party along the year, just find where.
If you like adventure go to Brotas city, a few hours by car from Sao Paulo, take the Washington Luis road , there are canyoning, trekking, rafting, mountain bike, etc. Or join a bus trip to PETAR caverns where you will explore caverns and falls in the rain forest, it takes one day long.
From Sao Paulo you can go anywhere in the country by plane. 1 week on the northeast tropical resorts is about US$ 400,00 including air fare, hotel and meals, sounds good? So you gotta try it!
Sao Paulo has also the most cultural lifestile of Brazil. There are lots of theaters and museums to go. Recently there were a Picasso expo at the MASP - Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo.
When you come to Sao Paulo keep in mind that Brazil is a huge country and Sao Paulo is very different from the rest of the country. Try a Rodeo Festival in the countryside, we are plenty of them, you will meet friendly people.
Try to avoid to come on Jan-begining of Feb, due to the heavy rains and do not lock yourself in your hotel room, enjoy life. Try the Caesar Tower hotel in Pequetita st. it's right in Vila Olympia district and next to the Dado Bier brewery, Miscellanea nightclub, Charles Edward bar, Iron Horse bar, Java Cafe bar, Athilio bar, Gitana nigh club, Cervejaria Continental brewery and dance club, TGI Friday's, Do Valle Sports Bar, Bar des Arts bar and restaurant, Blue Night jazz and blues, Camelo pizza place, Fligh 510 karaoke, Casa do Padeiro 24 h bar, Ropongi japanese food, Via Funchal theater and so many other places. Or try the Rennaissance hotel in Jardins district next to Margherita pizza place, Rodeo barbecue, Don Pepe di Napoli italian food, Fasano restaurant, The Galery nigh club, Don Curro spanish food, Paulista Grill barbecue, Cervejaria Continental brewery (II), Casa do Padeiro 24h bar (II), Famiglia Mancini italian food, Finnegan's pub.
I've traveled to many cities all around the world, including Tokyo, NY, LA, Paris, Stockolm, but every time I return to Sao Paulo it is like "I'm back home, finally".
