What is clear about most Chileans that I have met is that they know how how to have fun. Chile is not all about Pinochet and the news of his detention for the crimes he committed while in power. A few years ago, I attended an international seminar with a number of students and business people from Chile. I learned so much from one of my university teachers who was from Chile via Brazil.
While they are cautious in their feelings, they all welcome the return of their beautiful country to democratic rules. Chileans don't let the hard times get the best of them. They speak Spanish and other native languages.
If you go to Chile, you will probably start your journey to the interior of the country right in Santiago. It is a beautiful cosmopolitan city with great architectures which remind you of Europe. The Spanish vestiges, legacy are all over the country. Take the time to visit the Palacio de la Moneda, Mercado Central, Pre-Columbian museum, Museo de Santiago, Palacio de Bellas Artes, which is modeled after the Petit Palais de Paris. And if you are into trekking, you can go to the Andean backcountry. Be sure to have some guides who will be more than happy to sell you their time. This is what piques my interest in the country
Chile is not like Argentina where most of the inhabitants are of European
descent. You will have the opportunity to run into a lot of the indigenous people. They are beautiful people with wonderful customs you will appreciate.
Make plans to visit Valparaiso. You may not want to leave it. It will steal your heart. Then, you can explore Chile's many national parks, see the country with all its natural resources.
Don't forget to visit Chile's large bodegas: Concha y Toro, Santa Rita and Santa Carolina. You will have a ball at the great valley of Aconcagua and all the vineyards that cover the land. Chile is the 3rd biggest exporter of wine after France and Italy. Cabernet sauvignon and Merlot have let Chile's export. Of course, you will run into French investors down there. The French-Chilean venture is strong at CasaLapostolle located in Rapel valley. Sample the best of the chilean wines. Once again, familiarize yourself with Cocho y Toro, Santa Rita, Paul Bruno, Casa Lapostolle, CASABLANCA VALLEY, Nina CASABLANCA and Bisquertt. Enjoy yourself in Chile! Bon voyage!
