My first and only visit to Costa Rica was during the summer between my sophomore and junior year in high school. Though that was quite a few years ago, I still remember what a beautiful country it was. There is no organized military in the country, which may surprise many being the country between Panama and Nicaragua, but they don't need it at all. The people are so peaceful and wonderful that you don't even know they are living in an 3rd world country.
When I traveled there, I was traveling with a group of 10 high school students and 3 adult chaperones. We all lived in different houses with families that had a child our same age. During this time, we traveled all throughout the country. We saw such places as the ocean coast, mountain in the clouds, and the rainforest. My most memorable moment was going into the rain forest. I recommend that to anyone that has the chance. To see all the living organisms in such a peaceful place made me see how valuable the rain forest is. It is so important to keep these places protected. Costa Rica has beautiful beaches and many places that honeymooners would enjoy.
Being a person with a disability, I was very concerned about taking this traveling opportunity, but when I arrived in Costa Rica I knew that it would not be a problem. Though Costa Rica is definitely not as advanced in the accessibility department, it is certainly better than I thought. There were ramps, special entrances, and curb cuts. Some things you don't even see in certain places in the United States. The people (especially the cab drivers) are all willing to help to get people with disabilities from one place to another.
I will never forget the time I spent in Costa Rica. I hope to one day visit again.
