I went to Costa Rica earlier this year. Definitely a phenomenal trip. There is a ton to see from live volcanoes to beautiful beaches to tropical rain forests. While there, its amazingly cheap and the people are incredibly friendly. Rent a car, and reserve it before getting there as it can be difficult to make calls once you're in the country. Buy a Lonely Planet...it was helpful in determining where we should go. Try not to spend any time in San Jose except for flying in and using it as a starting point. Be prepared for treachorous driving, the roads are horrendous and what would be an hour drive in the US is about 3-4 hours in Costa Rica. Also, make sure you go early Spring or it will be raining on you the entire time. Aside from some hassles, it was one of the best trips I've been on. Oh, and one more thing....if you go you must go white water rafting...one of the best experiences of the trip.
