| bobnewman's Full Review: Costa Rica |
Costa Rica is the most socially and environmentally advanced nation in Central America. With friendly people, a stable government, a world-class environment, and very little crime, it is understandably the home of many American and European expats.
I have spent most of my time on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, which is lined with vacant beaches and virgin jungles. Try this: Fly down to Golfito from San Jose, which is a 50-minute flight, and just hang out down there for a week at a place like the Golfito Sailfish Rancho (www.sailfishrancho.com) or Roy's Zancudo Lodge (www.royszancudo.com). Yes, you need reservations and most of the people there are there to fish, but you can do whatever you want. The rancho is tucked up against the jungle in a private bay. Roy's is on a peninsula between Zancudo Beach and the river. Both offer outstanding flyfishing and light-tackle angling for sailfish, roosterfish, snook, jacks, bonito, dorado, trevally, and many other species. Both have excellent fare at the table and large rooms, plus refreshing drinks any time you want one. The boats and charter captains are tops.
The Golfito region is beautiful and quite exotic with that old-time Costa Rica feel to it. The approach by airplane is thrilling, so be ready. You can wander around in the jungles, swim, eat, drink, fish, photograph, or what have you, and there is really little if anything to worry about. This is a real getaway that you will remember forever. Lose some weight before you go.
