My husband and I went to Costa Rica a couple of years ago on a Mission Trip. We stayed a few days in San Jose (the Capital). After that we went to a little city called Gulfito on the Pacific Ocean. This was worth flying in the 15 seater airplane, flying over Death Mountain and landing on a grass air strip. This is one of the best places we have seen on God's great earth.
The people were so good to us. They offered their best which was not much. The local people did not want us to stay in their homes due to the fact that they could not offer us the comforts of home, (hot showers, air conditioning, etc.) and were ashamed they didn't have more to offer.
We stayed in what is called their resort which consisted of an 8 x 8 room and a 5 x 5 bathroom. However, if you want to experience the true culture of Costa Rica, you need to get out of the big cities and go to the rural areas.
We loved Gulfito and have made great friends there. We will return with our family shortly.
We had lunch at an outside restaurant, where they serve local catch from the ocean. We could see a little china town with the huts built on stilts over the water.
This is a place for people looking to get away from the crowds, see wild birds, monkeys, and the Pacific Ocean.
