My family and I travelled to Costa Rica for the week of Thanksgiving this year and I was very excited to get away from the dorm and relax before the insanity began as the semester drew to a close. Although it took some time to get to San Jose, it was the most beautiful sight to fly over at night. once we were settled there we stayed at the Don Carlos in downtown San Jose where the staff was great and the hotel very pretty. My father and I were a little intimidated by the rental car people at the curb at the airport, but they turned out to be trustworthy and very nice. Next we traveled to Playa Jaco where we had fun on the beach. the beaches there are so beautiful although you have to be very careful because since they are black sand beaches they heat up very quickly. In Jaco Beach, I recomend staying in Hotel Cocal and Casino. Their lobster is out of this world!
Next we drove up to La Fortuna to go to Arenal Volcano. The only difficulty with that drive is the fact that most of the roads are very narrow and aren't marked. The drive is beautiful though and there are many photo opportunities along the way. once in La Fortuna, the best place to stay is Arenal Observatory Lodge which is perfectly located next to the volcano.
After a couple of days there we drove back down to the next town past Jaco Beach which is Playa Hermosa and stayed in Villa Hermosa. That was a great experience to stay in a surf hotel. It was really cheap and not for high maintnence people, but it was a great experience. The owner Mike is always willing to help you out any way that he can. Unfortunately while we were there the surf wasnt as high as it usually is, but it was perfect for me to learn on. I recommend going to the Marriot which is nearby and going on their jetski safari along the coast its a lot of fun and you see some great sites.
For people who are beyond the excitement of travelling and truly living the experience the local way, and instead just want to see the spectactular views that Costa Rica has to offer then the two places to stay would be Villa Calletias near Jaco and the Hotel Grand de Jorno in San Jose. Villa Calletias at sunset is the most beautiful place that I think that I have ever been to in my entire life. and is definetly worth the travel. I plan to spend my honeymoon there as it is truly remarkable!
