My senior year of high school my parents took me on a Panama Canal Cruise. Although the cruise itself wasn't the greatest, when we toured Costa Rica, I was amazed.
First we docked and traveled inland to the capital, San Jose. He we went to the national theater, the national museum, and walked their tourist district. It was such an eye-opening experience. This country is so rich in culture and all the natives are so overwhelming friendly.
Next we, and a group of fellow cruisers, rented a small bus and took a drive through a rainforest. Our english fluent (and very understandable) tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about not only his country's past and present state, but also about the animals, spiders, lizards, and greenery that we saw. He had an answer to every question. The tour company provided us with wonderful lunches and t-shirts.
We ended up in the small town of Sarchi. Here, they are famous for their ox-carts. The tiny little town sits a top coffee fields and overlooks thick forests. We browsed and bought souvenirs and even got to watch them make an ox-cart.
After such a wonderful touring day, we headed back to the ship and left the country of Costa Rica. I would recommend that this little country be high on your travel destinations list. It really opened my eyes to a Central America I never would have known, or expected.
