The Galapagos is a wonderful place. The trick is to do it right. Here are the things to consider: 1) Do you get seasick often? 2) Do you hate big groups? 3) Do you value personal attention over price? 4)Do you like snorkeling/scuba diving. Let's address these points in sequence.
1) Seasickness is a big issue on a boat trip. If you are on a small yacht (10-20 people) you are going to be MOVING! If you don't like small cabins and big waves, you won't enjoy this version of the Galapagos. Try the larger vessels which are far more stable.
2) Yacht size. Seasickness is balanced against group size. On big boats, you don't get seasick, but you're clumped in very big groups. This means you can't go to the off the beaten track islands and getting from the boat to the island can be more of a hassle. Plus, you will be hitting islands with packs of people--reducing the naturalistic aura of the islands. finally, guide quality can be more variable.
3)Personal attention--again a big yacht means you get a more standard offering. There isn't a special trip here or there, nor is your food made to order. Small boats are fantastic in this regard. Your meals can be somewhat tailored to your tastes and special trips can be arranged for a small group. THis is particularly nice if you like water sports and feel like snorkeling a bit longer than hiking on the islands.
4) Water sports--if you are a diver, I recommend a diving based tour over a land-based tour. The best stuff, to be perfectly honest, is underwater: sharks, rays, big fish. You can find combo tours which are great because you can spend your surface interval on a land tour!
Final recommendations: The Beagle was an incredible small yacht with a fantastic guide--Luis. You'll love the experience!
