Pros: Wonderful ruins and historic buildings
Cons: You won't feel safe here, dirty
The Bottom Line: You HAVE to go through here to get to Machu Picchu, stay as short of a time as possible. Machu Picchu is worth the time spent here.

| plumbly's Full Review: Cuzco |
We spent about 8 days total in Cusco, before and after our hike to Machu Picchu and 2 night stay in Agua Callenties.
There are many beautiful ruins and sites to see in Cusco, but, the city is disgustingly filthy, you will be hounded by street beggars, and crime and pick pockets are everywhere. You will NEVER feel safe walking around there.
We were 4 adults, 2 teens and 2 children. Food was a real problem, especially for the 4 younger ones. We didn't find food that anyone in the group thought was anything "good" until our second last day there. Burgers are not "burgers" like they would get in any restaurant in the States. Pizza was made with llama/alpaca cheese... which, just for a point of reference, does NOT taste or smell anything like mozzarella. Pasta was even "different" tasting in some places.
We were traveling with a friend who really wanted to stay in a hostel. We were in a place that was about $8 US per person per night, with 2 in a room. For that you got beds, and a bathroom, rarely hot water in the trickling shower, and bread, jam, and coffee for breakfast, plus the use of the kitchen equipment. The place was reasonably clean and there WERE toilet seats and paper!
Toilet paper and toilet seats are in short supply throughout Peru outside of Lima, from what we found. This is true in restaurants and all public toilets. It got to the point where the kids would rate the toilets after using them. Seats? Paper? running water? soap?
The old buildings and ruins in and around the city were spectacular. But, we NEVER felt safe moving around, it was dirty, and you were constantly being followed by street children looking to sell you something.
