Pros: FOOD, NIGHTLIFE, CHEAP
Cons: Super touristy, COLD at night, getting approached to buy postcards/finger puppets every 2 min
The Bottom Line: AWESOME! Great nightlife, cheap high quality food, beautiful city, cool accents, Machu Picchu starting point........... what more do you want

| dprice77's Full Review: Cuzco |
Cuzco is simply, amazing. Amazing food, great nightlife and beautiful city. I did research there in Altitude Mountain Sickness for a month there and enjoyed everyday there. People spend way too little time there. I would recommend at least a week.
NIGHTLIFE/SAFETY
And dont worry since theres TONS of tourists there is a party EVERY night. Its ridiculous. Mondays, Sundays whatever. Mama Africa and Mama America are the main places. ALOT of fun, but some of the girls there are a little trashy. They love the gringos though. Salsa dancing at Gravara. Its a safe town. But watch out for the little kids that swarm you at night (not as much during the day) trying to sell things. They are VERY good at stealing something from your purse while you are distracted. I had to chase down some of them punks to get a camera back :) The city is safe though but use your head too.
FOOD
And the food! WOW! 3 course meals, great quality, and CHEAP. Conversion rate as of May 2006--3.3 soles per dollar. So most fine dining quality plates (10-15 soles)
Recommendations-
Food: Cheap- Jacks ($3 for yummy sandwiches and the best breakfast ever) and the "french place" across form it on the corner ($4 for a three course meal)....
More expensive (relative of course)- Bar 17 (sp?) in San Blas ($7 for the best alpaca steak ever Ive had)
LODGINGS
Alot of good places for 20 soles/night (sorry I will update this when I find out where I stayed)....of course if you want luxury go with Hotel Monestario or Liberador (5 stars and worth every penny)....Cant remember all the names but if you email me a name I can tell you what its like (It was my business going around to all the hotels).
SIGHTS
I would reccommend hang gliding in the Sacred Valley (supposed to be some of the best scenery), white water rafting there isnt the best (only up to Class III level) in Rio Otallaymbo (sp?), day hike up to the White Jesus statue and the ruins (if you walk they might have security charging for toursist pass which is $40 sole "multi-sight" 10 day pass but you get around this if you rent a bike or drive up to them), and the $7 day tour (get it 9 am daily out of Plaza Mayor) that takes you around Sacred Valley, Otallyambo, and other outlying sights (def worth it).
MACHU PICCHU
Have you read the other reviews??!!! Probably one of the best things Ive done in my life. I went with SAS travel (book it at least 6 months in advance in high season (june/July/August), they only give 500 or 600 people permits a day and each company is allowed like 15 people/day). PLAN AHEAD! SAS travel was absolutely great, pleasant porters, amazing food (incredible for camping), knowledgable guide. The only thing is I dont know if they pay their porters very good. THese people carry 25 kgs on their backs for you in sandals for 4 days, they deserve good pay. Just compare around. Ecotrek pays their porters good. But anyway, I did the 4 day option and would recommend it. Make sure to spend a night in Agua Calientes and theres a catarata Mondor (sp?) that is a short 30 min hike (down the railroad tracks the other way, $5 entrance) that is worth going to before your train ride back . As far as lodgings go in Aguas, Dont get ripped off, compare a few places. Some places will tell you double because they think you dont know any better.
If you like to party and eat good food this is the place to spend more time before the most amazing trip of your life (Inca Trail/Machu Picchu)
If you have any other questions about Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia let me know. Happy to help. sdsirfur@hotmail.com
