Inti Raymi is the festival of the solstice. Festivities in Cuzco are rampant for an entire week. I was there in 1999 for the week.
Parades occur daily throughout the week and thousands of people turn up to brave the sunshine and see the people in the parade. Different days are devoted to different groups: one day, for example are all little school children, another college students. Dancing and ornate dress are common for every day. I've never seen this amount of culture. One of the parade days I went to, the President of the Country was there, surrounded by his guards. I wouldn't have missed that for the world.
On June 22nd, up at the ruins, Sassyuhuman (spelling? it sounds like sexy-woman, and every local likes to tell that to North Americans "va a sexy-woman" and they chuckle), is the big festival. It lasts hours and hours. I got there at 6 AM to get a good spot. If you get there after 10, you just won't get a good spot. They re-enact the history of the Incas. It is a festival I will return to.
They have 'tickets' that may be bought to sit on the field that sell for about 40$ American. They want you to believe you must buy one, as this is how the event is partially funded. Those seats are superb, but the ticket is not needed to sit farther away (as i did). And the ticket ensures a numbered, safe seat. Recommended for families, not recommended for budget travelers. Also keep in mind that if you buy a ticket for a seat, you do not have to get there 4 hours early to claim a spot on the rocks/grass to get a good view!
good luck, and if you have any questions about it, ---> robbudo@hotmail.com
