Weather: - Cold
Terrain: - Andes
Hotels: - Posada Las Heroinas (on the Parque las Heroinas, 522-665)) is still in business, although prices have gone up a bit to 1500 Bs/night. It looks like Tom Evenou (the Swiss owner) has also started a new tour place called "Bum Bum Tours" with a variety to tours for a variety of different tastes. The posada has declined a bit in quality but it is still a good deal.
We went out to dinner almost next door at Hotel "Cheo's Carnes a la Brasa". It looked like an interesting place and it was full of local and europeans dining. The service was really bad and the food was only mediocre. I really would not recommend it.
The exchange rate was about 480 Bs for a dollar (that has not changed since last year) but prices have doubled or tripled. Gasoline prices have quadrupled but it is still a good deal at about $.50 cents a gallon.
Essentials: - Merida was great! I was sorry that I could only spend a couple of days there. The Andes are my favorite part of the world.
The teleferico is running again at last. It was fantastic. It now runs to all but the last level. Loma Redonda was a bit cool and the air was a bit thin at over 4045 m (12,000 ft). It's been a while since I've been that high. Los Nevados is at 2,500 m. There was a bit of frost in the air also.
They have upped the price of the teleferico to 7,500 Bs. The lines were really short, so short in fact that they wanted to wait until they had a minimum of 15 people before they would leave. They opened at 7:30am and I was expecting to be at the top by 9:00am. I had a 2:20 plane to Caracas to catch. So my schedule was a bit tight, but we made it. There are now four airlines flying to Merida. One of them flys from Aruba directly (Santa Barbara Air). It looks like Avensa has a little bit of competition there.
