General Comments:
We arrived late Sunday night at the airport, where we rented a car for six days. The car rental was ridiculously expensive, and when insurances and taxes were all added in, we paid about $150 per day for the Toyota Corolla. Because of concerns about theft, the car had two different anti-theft systems, a bolt through the gear box to prevent anyone from shifting gears without a proper key to remove the bolt, and another key with a touch system which enabled the ignition key to work for the next 10 seconds.
We drove through town on freeways and then on some winding roads along the coast until very late we found a hotel an hour or two east of town. It was pretty basic, $15, clean but sparse furnishings, and no shower head on the shower faucet. We faced a noisy highway, and seemed to be among very few patrons.
The next day we took a full day to reach Carupano, where there was supposed to be a tourist-oriented Carnival (Mardi Gras) celebration. We had a great breakfast and lunch along the way. The former was at a collection of huts at a major intersection, and when we asked for eggs, the cook assured us she had some, then sent a coworker to the store to buy them.
