Pros: Beautiful bay, illuminated castle, history, nightlife, good base for exploration of the peninsula
Cons: Night-time noise, con artists galore, high tourist prices, too many tacky tourists
The Bottom Line: Not authentic Turkey by any means but budget partiers will be in their glory and independent explorers will find much of interest.

| kettravels's Full Review: Bodrum |
I was first in Bodrum when it really WAS paradise, when the windmills on the hills were considered "off in the countryside", Gumbet barely existed, and the natives were friendly in the finest Turkish tradition. Wasn't that long ago, either!
The influx of tourism has changed all that and Bodrum now attracts the lower-class tourist from Britain/Germany who comes here to party on the cheap. This of course results in Bodrum also being a magnet for the worst of the Turks who flock here looking for anything from quick cash to new passports ... it's astounding to see how successful they are.
The discos start up at midnight and continue till at least 4 am and there is no such thing as noise restrictions! This is all fine when YOU'RE out partying but rather aggravating if ... heaven forbid! ... you're wanting a night of sleep!!
Still, I'm recommending Bodrum although I, personally, would only visit off-season when most of the rif-raf has moved on to Ibiza or wherever.
The Turkish government has, to their credit, maintained a "low-rise" Bodrum with much of its original quaintness still intact (at least in the center). Many hotels/pensions have terraces with sweeping views of the remarkable twin harbours, the cascades of bougainvillea, the castle, the sunsets.
Bodrum is a town of great historical importance and there is a lot of exploring that can still be done if you're so inclined. Bodrum is also a starting point for coastal boat cruises ... competition for your business is fierce and unrelenting. Bodrum also serves as a good base for daytrips by road to other towns on the penninsula.
