| daydreamer25's Full Review: Bodrum |
After I've read the reviews about my country and my hometown I really want to write one. The reviews written before are all true and nice just It may be interesting to look from a natives eyes I want to tell you about Turgutreis which used to be a small village of Bodrum but now the half English town (Lots of English people settled down in Bodrum peninsula especially in Turgutreis in 5 years and they are still buying houses.) and said to be the new Bodrum. I grown up in another Aegean region city called Aydın then my family moved to Turgutreis after their retirement.Until then I've been spending my summer holidays and mid-term holidays and new years and religious holidays there. Dad running a second hand business in Turgutreis, aunt and cousins living in Bodrum. I love my country and visit different cities of east, south and west (unfortunately I have'nt had the chance to go northern east). Nevertheless to say in every region there are different cultures, traditions, beauties to see, historical places to visit and delicious foods to eat but among all my favorite is the Aegean region, the southern west coasts. I am not going to tell my boring life story don't worry but I don't know where to start. Well firstly Turgutreis is county legally bounded to Bodrum and Bodrum is a county of a province called Mugla. Mugla itself has no connection to sea but it has 11 counties and most of them seaside touristic places; Fethiye, Koycegiz, Marmaris (has a public beach I hate it but clean coasts around city centre and very green), Oludeniz(famous for dead sea and paragliding and a has a small bay with tree houses and a small spring), Dalyan (famous for careta careta water turtles), Gokova (on the way to Marmaris have only one beach but a stream flows into the see in that beach and fresh fish, god I love the small restaurant settled on the stream they catch the fish then cook and serve and you can walk in the very very cold water while waiting your meal or chase some ducks ), Datça(wind for surfers, historical places and undersea is very rich for diving must see place and very easy to go from Bodrum) and Bodrum (famous for it's entertaintment, night clubs, discos, white houses, coasts). The most beatiuful thing about this settlement is all that counties are very close to Bodrum. (2-5 hours by bus.)I am using the highway to go Bodrum but if you use the airway the nearest airport is the Dalaman Airport it's about 2 hours to Bodrum by car. if you didn't come with a tour you should take a taxi but do not forget to bargain about the price (this bargain word passes everything written about Turkey. Unfortunately it's true that some uneducated people of us try to cheat on prices and disturb tourists, pull them, insist them to buy a tshirt, souvenior, ticket, tour vs... but they are not the majority.)Then I'm taking off the bus in the Bodrum garage. The Bodrum terminal is separated into 3 parts. The first part is for intercity, long distance coaches, on the right hand side when you enter from the main entrance, where small bus agencies and coaches located. second part is for Bodrum peninsula coasts. There are orange minibuses on the left hand side (to Turgutreis, Bitez, Gumbet, Yalıkavak, Gundogan, Akyarlar... going at most 50 kilometres) last part for local services going to near distances around Bodrum and they are located at the back of second part. My house is in Turgutreis so I take that orange minibuses. they don't wait too much at most 15 minutes so wait the next one if the bus is full. I am saying that because you can also travel on foot but it's very tiring even for 18 km's since the bus stops for every passenger in it's route and takes too many people on foot but you should take any minibus on foot if you're not in the terminal since you can not find empty seats especially in high seasons. you're giving cash money for ticket in the bus, 2 months ago it was 2,5 YTL, something around $1,5 from Bodrum to Turgutreis. It's 18 km (11 mile) takes around 25 minutes. Yes at last the city border sign on the right hand side. Shortly after this sign the minibus will turn to left and will pass through a village of Turgutreis (they have to) called Akcaalan (have a nice over view but another village called Karabağ have better.). After passing the narrow streets of the village I am on the main road again and my house is just across
there but I'm not getting off. I first must see my dad, my orange tree, say hello to neighbours and take my bianchi to salut the marine. Anyway I love that travel from Bodrum to Turgutreis just for the entrance to Turgutreis. there is a long, wide, straight asphalt downhill. houses and shops on the right and left and at the end of the road the blue blue sea, then my little fork island. When you stop for the first traffic lights, on the left stays the Turgutreis coach terminal (it's not the last stop, minibus stop in a different place), the left road goes to Gumusluk and the right road goes to Karabag village. The second traffic lights on the right another road to Karabağ on the right the Turgutreis Baazar settles, then the supermarkets on the left and right and the entrance to bazaar (bazaar settles only on saturdays) on the right and our secondhand shop. 50 meters after bus turns right and the last stop. You're in. There is a five star hotel in Turgutreis named the "Aegean Dreams", I only used the pool but as I heard the hotel is very satisfying. and there are also lots of apart hotels and summer houses for rent. Turgutreis is most famous for it's bazaar which settles down every saturday. you can find lots of stuff especially cheap clothing, but the crowd and bargaining process may be unpleasant and tiring. The reason Turgutreis is a better place to stay (of course in my opinion) is it's beaches and silence compared to Bodrum. Bodrum's night life is fantastic but it's over crowded and there isn't any clean beach to swim in the centre. The nearest clean beach is the Bardakçı Beach, which is not in walking distance. Of course everyones holiday preference is different. Some seek for peace and natural beauties and some night life and fun. Anyway you can have both in Bodrum peninsula it doesn't matter where you stay. If you stay in Bodrum, you take a dolmus to better beaches or stay in gumbet, yalıkavak or turgutreis, you can be in Bodrum at nights. in high seasons (may-september) you can find dolmus to 24 hours to everywhere from Bodrum.
FUN
Night life in Bodrum is very chearful and colorful. Non stop music and party in the very very narrow streets (really hard to walk in but this doesn't stop anyone), whose local name is Clubs Street. It's also the Turkish celebrities and the paparazzi's summer place. The Halikarnas disco is very big and famous and there is a catamaran party in the sea everyday after midnight. Just one warning for overdosed, young and alone ladies, you can unluckily meet some rude, demanding male hanzos. (hanzo is the turkish wording for this kind of rude, uneducated, bearish man). There are almost every day concerts and shows in the Bodrum Castle and the historical theatre.
SEA
As I said above you can not swim in the Bodrum beach but there are lots of wonderful beaches in the peninsula, you can visit a different beach everyday. Namely, Ortakent Beach, Yahsi, Yalıkavak, Gundogan, Bitez, Turgutreis, Akyarlar, Meteor Beach, Bagla, Kargı, Aspat Beach, Gumusluk are some of I remember the farthest is one hour distance. Oh I forgot to say the nearest beach is Gumbet but I don't recommend there as over the years because of the crowd, it get dirtier and dirtier. My favourite among all is Yahsi and Meteor. and in Bodrum but I love the dead sea soooo much.
FOOD
Turkish Cousin is very rich like it's culture. I am sure you've heard about kebab. kebab is kind of eastern anatolian tradition but you can find a good kebab master in every city in Turkey also in Bodrum, there are also lots of fish restaurant for every budget but if you're seeking for the best fish you should eat in Gumusluk (8 km. to Turgutreis / 25 km. to Bodrum), I recomend you to taste the olive oiled vegetables cooked in Aegean style like beans, aubergine, sarma (rice rolled in grape leafs.)... If don't want to taste new thing you have fast food in Mac Donalds or Burger King or KFC in Bodrum.
Lastly if you visit Bodrum I recommend you to go scuba diving and rent a car or motorcycle or even a bicycle for a day to visit around, eat fish and hang in the seaside bars of Gumusluk for a day, visit Bodrum Castle (there is an underwater museum in the castle) in the city centre and jump to the sea after night clubbing in the sunset. and call me :)
I know the entrance was very detailed then I gave up because I am now working in the capital city of Turkey (Ankara)which is not close to Bodrum and I missed there very very much..... and I have some paperworks to do right now. Life is unfair!!!
