| TheSmartTraveler's Full Review: Bodrum |
If you are looking for a place to party till you drop, shop for handicrafts, snorkel, and see beautiful scenery, Bodrum is the place. We flew on Turkish Airlines on a direct flight from Miami to Istanbul and then made our way to this spot that is the port from which many sailing trips leave. Many people you will run into here in the summer are daytrippers from the nearby Greek Island of Kos. Bodrum has been a favorite vacation spot for Turkish people as well as British and other Europeans for many years. The harbor is full of jetsetters, yachts and gulets.
The town itself consists of white cubic houses with varnished wood detailing. The main attraction is the castle of St. Peter located in the middle of the city, built by the knights of St. John of Jerusalem who were based in Rhodes in the 1400's. It also has the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, which you should not miss. Climb up to the castle ramparts for a great view of Bodrum. Behind the town on the Gumbet Road you will see the ancient theater, which also offers a great view. Go a few blocks inland from Neyzen Tevfik Caddesi to see what is left of the mausoleum, which was once one of the Seven Wonders of the World. You will see exhibits, models, drawings, and gardens on the site of King Mausolus's tomb.
Go to Neyzen Tevfik Caddesi to take an inexpensive, all day boat trip. You will sail to the hot springs at Karaada where you can rub orange mud on yourself. Next you will go to a pebble beach west of Bodrum called Orta Kent Yalisi, which has beachfront restaurants, pensions, hotels, and camping areas. Your last stop will be to a small cove known as the Aquarium, but you won't see many fish if it is full of other boats.
If you go to Bodrum in the summer, you better get there early in the day to find a room; otherwise, you won't have any problem finding accommodations that range from $15 a night for a pension up to the new, ultra luxurious Marmara Bodrum from over $400 a night.
You can enjoy visiting the surrounding villages that are like stepping back in time. Go to Bodrum's otogar (bus station) to take a dolmus to wherever you would like to go.
You'll enjoy delicious seafood as well as traditional Turkish Mezzes at a reasonable price. Enjoy your time in Bodrum.
