Bodrum, mellow and attractive in the warm days at the end of March, would sear and rattle the mind from May until September. As I walked by cafes on the esplanade, I saw Turks drinking glasses of tea from the few occupied tables and chairs, wearing Italian sunglasses and tight clothes. Not far in the future, every seat will bear the added weight of blondes from North Sea countries promoting severe sunburns by wearing as little as possible. Fallen branches and stagnant puddles will be swept off the floors of hibernating outdoor discos, and 30 foot yachts will slip out of their rope handcuffs and squeeze the 5 or 10 fishing boats I could see to the margins of the harbor.
At the harbor, I saw polished yachts of a lemon-colored wood resting idle on the water, their Turkish flags flapping in the wind. Past the yachts, I came to a concrete hook serving as a breakwater for the inner harbor. Climbing to the other side of the long stretch of concrete, I found 6 foot steps descending to cold sea, perfect benches that blotted out the town at my back, giving me a view over the water towards the Greek island of Kos. I sat and read my paper for an hour, finally returning to town for an early evening Doner Kebap.
