When a couple of friends and I finally decide to go to Turkey on a summer holiday, I initially had some reservations about the place. Firstly, I knew absolutely nothing about it except that it was very hot.
However, when we got there, I cancelled all reservations. It was probably one of the best holidays I've been on. This was helped by the fantastic apartment we stayed in. The 'Green Rooms' in Gumbet (a town just outside Bodrum) were absolute paradise. A large swimming pool, a great pool-side bar as well as a cellar bar with karaoke, and very pleasant staff just made our stay marvellous.
Turkey is not for people that don't like the sun, however, the temperature didn't drop below 30 degrees all holiday (even in the middle of the night) and on many days it soared to a staggering 46 degrees!
This is a good thing, until you get burnt! The local town of Gumbet was really lively and a short Dolmus (their local bus service) ride to Bodrum was also well worth it.
Bodrum hosts the largest open air nightclub in the world in the 'Helikanos'. Every week they have a top celebrity DJ (we were lucky enough to see ex- champion boxer Nigel Benn DJ). At £12 for transport there and back and entrance fee this was good value. Everywhere, we went it was 20 pence a pint of Effiz (the local Turkish lager which was very tasty) and in the most expensive bars 75 pence! Food was also very cheap (the best and biggest kebab in the world for a mere 80 pence! Well I could go on all day about how good the place is, but I'm hoping that you'll find out for yourselves and go!
