| marytara's Full Review: Niagara Falls |
I'm lucky to have this once (and still) a popular honeymoon destination practically in my backyard. Well, not quite in my backyard, but within an 1.5 hour drive. I didn't realize how lucky I was to have this natural wonder nearby me until I went away to college and encountered so many people who'd never seen 'The Falls', my now-husband included.
To begin, Niagara Falls is located just outside of Buffalo, NY at the Border between NY and Canada. Because of this there are 2 sides to the falls, a Canadian side and an American side. They are both quite beautiful though most of the fun stuff to do at Niagara Falls is the Canadian Side and they do have a better view.
Crossing into Canada, is going into another country - so you'll need to have Photo ID, a Birth Certificate or a Passport and go through Customs. They can (and often) will inspect your vehicle and will ask you a few questions about your destination and origin, citizenship and the duration of your stay as well as things you purchased and if you are declaring anything. You'll need to go through this routine on the way in and out. I've never had any trouble at the border and for the most part its quick - though traffic delays can be common, especially at the most common place to cross the Rainbow Bridge.
Get Ready to Walk. Which means, wear comfortable shoes and if you have young children bring a stroller. Also, bring a light jacket even in the summer because it can get chilly at the falls due to the misting.
There are lots of things to do at Niagara Falls on your small getaway.
The Following activities are family or couple oriented If you have to pick just one of these I would recommend the Maid of the Mist.
Maid of the Mist: This is a boat ride that takes you into the falls for a great view. Be prepared to get wet. They sell rain parkas, and you WILL need one.
Cave of the Winds: This is a walking tour that involves an elevator ride DOWN and INTO the falls.
Prospect Point Observation Tower: This is an observation tower, where you can ride up an elevator and look out over the falls.
The Following activitives are more couple oriented
Hard Rock Cafe Yep, the all time favorite tourist dining experience.
Casino Niagara Cash in some of that colorful canadian currency and play slots or black jack.
Laser Light Show After dusk - Laser lights choreographed to music and projected over the falls. Its very beautiful
There are tons of "gimmicky" and tourist traps at the falls. Other attractions include a Ripley's Believe it or Not, a wax museum and a House of Horrors. Or, go to Marineland and see the marine animals, the whales are fabulous.
Or, if you are a shopper, you'll enjoy the Factory Outlet Center at the Rainbow bridge and also take advantage of the currency being in our favor. Just be careful about the currency - many places in the falls area do not give favorable exchange rates. .
Not for you? what about hotels with heart shaped jacuzzis and adult entertainment.
All in all there's a lot to see and do in Niagara Falls. Yep, its a tourist trap but you're bound to fall in love at the Falls.
