| misct's Full Review: Canada |
For those of you who don't know, I am a transplanted Canadian, now living in the Excited States. As you can tell by the title of this epinion, I really miss my home. So to combat homesickness, I thought I would extoll the virtues of my home and native land.
What I thought would be interesting is I would write what I miss most about Canada, now that I don't live there. Who knows, maybe this will be a help to all other transplanted Canadians who are going through withdrawal.
WIDE OPEN SPACES
I now live in California, a state whose population is larger than all of Canada. You can't go anywhere without seeing hordes of people. When you go hiking here, forget about getting away from it all. Everyone else has the same idea! I miss the quiet trails I used to hike in the mountains, surrounded by trees, not people!
SNOW
Yes, I miss snow. Although living in Vancouver I never saw a lot of it. But all I had to do is look up at the North Shore Mountains if I wanted to see any. Now I have to drive 3 to 4 hours if I want to ski.
CANADIAN MUSIC
Spirit of the West, Skydiggers, Blue Rodeo, and more! All I can say is thank goodness for Napster!
SHREDDIES AND, UM, FEMININE HYGIENE PRODUCTS
Actually, this category is about all the things that I can only get in Canada.
Aero Bar - a wonderful chocolate bar full of air bubbles. There's nothing remotely like it here.
Shreddies - One of my favourite breakfast cereals. Kind of hard to explain it, but oh boy is it good with strawberries!
Feminine Hygiene Products - Imagine my horror when I move down here and find out the don't have the brand of maxi-pads I'm partial to! Now imagine my even further horror when I have to ask my Dad to send me the ones from Canada because I don't like any of the ones here. My Dad! How embarrassing is that?
HOCKEY ON TV ALMOST EVERY NIGHT
Why is it when I move away that the Vancouver Canucks get semi-decent? I think what I miss most is Hockey Night in Canada. Especially Don Cherry!
PEOPLE NOT MAKING FUN OF MY ACCENT
Okay, okay, it's funny when I say the word "about" the first time, but every time? Come on! People think it's quaint when the Brits speak, and cool when the Aussies speak. But why do the Canadians get made fun of?
There is so much more I could list, but I've probably gone on too much already. Bottom line... Canada is a wonderful country full of diversity, many beautiful places to see, warm, friendly people and the best hockey players around! For Americans, it's a cheap getaway because of the exchange rate.
If you're thinking about it, I highly recommend a visit to Canada. And I won't even ask you to bring me some
maxi-pads!
