Pros: None, unless frightened of bridges (or tunnels!)

| fiona32's Full Review: Canada |
I loved the review on Canada by Missbehaving! I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and only moved to West Michigan (200 miles away) when I was 38. Visiting Canada several times yearly with my family was always a great excursion! And then as an adult, I vacationed there numerous times. Canada has everything, and the people are absolutely delightful! Plus I didn't need to know a second language!
I believe anyone, (especially from the Midwest, and not wanting to travel too far), should put this trip on their travel agenda. Perhaps even being able to road-trip it could add to its desirability.
I'll never forget the dozens and dozens of trips we took from downtown Detroit, crossing the Detroit River, to get to Ontario, Canada. There are two ways to accomplish this: driving across the Ambassador Bridge, a gigantically high, long, suspension bridge, or even more ominous, going through the underwater tunnel, buried deep beneath the Detroit River. Now THAT was scary! And it still is, for this mildly agorophobic traveler. On the other hand, I doubt many here wouldn't have a wee bit of trepidation, driving through a concrete tube hundreds of feet under a river. But it hasn't caved in yet! And I'm pretty sure it isn't going to do so!! Getting there is part of the real excitement of the trip.
Once in Canada, it really does have the feel of being in a different country, surprisingly. We would be checked at Customs, then (fortunately) sent on our way. The appeal of this beautiful country can be checked out on the Internet (or any travel agency), if you feel it beckoning you.
I heartily recommend visiting Montreal, (generally French speaking), a breathtakingly beautiful and ultra-modern city, Toronto, truly beautiful, with restaurants, wonderful museums, hotels, shopping --- both cities remind me of the best of New York and Chicago combined. And clean as can be ---- such a wonderful aspect of their appeal. Its difficult to classify "type of travel" at the end of this opinion, as it will depend on the traveler's starting location. But it is as pleasurable for a day-long get-away, as a week's vacation. And families with small children could enjoy a trip to Canada as much as couples. When I was in my late teens and early twenties, and single, we always went to Grand Bend, Canada, which was similar in "activities", shall we say, as Ft. Lauderdale. Grand Bend was reached by heading north from Detroit, and reaching Canada by way of Port Huron, about two hours away, and crossing the Blue Water Bridge.
As a child, I recall the years of going to "the cottage" in Canada. It would always be to a different one, somewhere in the province of Ontario, and reachable within 3 to 4 hours maximum. The lakes, the countryside, the lush forests, and immaculate farms will remain in my memory forever. I consider every vacation I ever took in Canada to be an incomparable joy. I am very grateful I grew up in Detroit, so that visiting this beautiful country created many beautiful memories.
