The Princess Hotel in Acapulco is a magnificent jewel in a beautiful land. I recently had the pleasure of staying there with my wife for the International Communication Association conference. We stayed 4 days and 4 nights in early June of 2000. I will soon be posting an epinion on the city of Acapulco itself, please look for it for more detail.
The Princess Hotel is not actually within the city, but over the small mountain and a few miles to the east. It is fairly secluded from the city, which is both good and bad. It is good, because it makes it easier to relax because it is so peaceful. It's bad because if you end up going into town everyday, it will run up your cab fares.
Hotel structure: The hotel structure itself features the main building which is shaped like a Mayan or Aztec pyramid. There are two other "towers" that are consistent with the theme, though are not pyramid shaped. The main lobby is very open and quite a sight upon first arrival. One other somewhat unusual thing you will notice is that all the floors are open as well. There is a deck with open space that looks out over the surrounding area on each floor. When it is hot and muggy, this mean you won't feel the cool relief of AC until you get to your room.
Hotel features: Wow. That describes it best. There are seven (yes, seven) swimming pools. A couple of these ave waterfalls, one has a short water slide (wasn't open when I was there), and one has a swim-up bar. There are plenty of lounge chairs to sun yourself, and plenty of palm trees for shade if you wish. There are at least 5 restaurants, most of which I enjoyed. Each has a different menu, so be sure to check them out should you stay here. One features HUGE buffets with more food than you can stand. Fresh fruits are abundant (and safe, as is the water and ice), and there is enough variety to satisfy the pickiest of eaters (I should know, I'm very picky). There is, of course, access to the beach. The beach is nice, but once you go on it, you are no longer on hotel property (it is owned by the Federal Govt.), so you WILL be swamped by people trying to sell you sunglasses, rent horse rides, boogie boards, chairs, tents or sell you drinks. You won't find that problem on the hotel property. There are also several stores, two 18-hole golf courses, basketball and tennis courts, and a game room. The golf is rather expensive (71 dollars -not pesos- for 18 holes), so I didn't go.
Service: The service at the hotel was exquisite. When we needed something, we could call and get it (like an iron). They restocked towels and stuff twice per day (to cool down, you'll likely take frequent showers) which was great, and they even turn down the bed at night for you. Restaurant service was magnificent as well.
Other thoughts: This was truly a magnificent place to stay, and I had a great time. Had we not been a part of the conference, I doubt we could have afforded the stay though. We got off lucky with only a $99/night rate, when it could have easily been $300. Some of the meals were also a bit on the spendy side, and would have been slightly cheaper to eat somewhere else. However, once you figure in the trouble and cost of taking a cab downtown and back, it's a lot more enticing just to stay at the hotel and eat.
If you get the chance to do Acapulco, and you want to do it in style, stay at the Princess. You truly will feel like a King (or Queen!)
While we were there for a conference, you can tell I really made it more of a vacation for myself. This is a perfect spot for a honeymoon or romantic get-away.
