My wife and I just returned from our vacation in Cabo San Lucas, and although I am a bit tired from travel, I would like to describe to you this wonderful place.
Cabo San Lucas is located at the very tip of the Baja Peninsula--literally at land's end. On the flight down, it really struck me that most of the Baja Peninsula is desolate. With the exception of a few scattered towns, there is really not much along this 1,000 mile expanse except for mountains, desert and sparse vegetation. Flying into Cabo San Lucas after seeing miles and miles of inhospitable landscape made me feel like I was viewing a jewel for the first time. This is not to say that the rest of the Baja is not beautiful; indeed, it is. It has a stark beauty that is not soon forgotten.
The airport is about a forty minute ride from town. Our accomodations were at Terra Sol, at the very tip of the peninsula and about forty minutes from the airport. Our condominium was spacious and well-appointed, and we had a beautiful view of the ocean. Downtown was a ten minute walk away, and was easily accessible for us.
The "strip" in Cabo San Lucas has many restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops which offer almost everything that the tourist might seek. The marina area is also a great place to go, and if you can find the right seaside restaurant, you can enjoy dinner and drinks and watch the boats coming and going.
Activities are limitless. There are several championship-quality golf courses, although the greens fees are a little on the pricey side. Most of the fun is focussed on water sports. You can rent a boat or a jet ski, go parasailing, or take any number of tours that include glass-bottomed boats and whale-watching (in season, of course). If you prefer land travel, horseback riding is available.
The food is excellent. The seafood is fresh and delicious. The traditional Mexican cuisine is special and is still prepared the way it was hundreds of years ago. Words can't describe the local margaritas, because this is the land where the drink originated. Believe me when I say, simply, that the margaritas are tangy and good.
The only advice I would offer about Cabo San Lucas is to stick to the out-of-the-way places. Avoid the Margaritavilles, the Kokomos, and the Seafood Mamas. Go to the Rio Grill, Tony's in the marina, and the Giggling Marlin. These places are still authentic and have not become as "commercialized" as places that are concerned with making money off of tourists and aren't "real" anymore.
I highly recommend Cabo San Lucas as a vacation destination. The people are gracious and friendly and seem to be honestly concerned with making your stay enjoyable. In fact, Skygirl and I enjoyed it so much that we bought a timeshare before we left!
