Huatulco is a beach resort, located on the Pacific, in the state of Oaxaca, south of Acapulco. Back in the early 90's it was being marketed by the Mexican government as a master-planned resort, similar to Cancun. Unlike Cancun or Puerto Vallarta, there isn't a lot to do except enjoy the beach and a few of the tours offered at the resort. The majority of the people vacationing here tended to be wealthy Mexicans and Europeans. We met several Canadians and only a handful of Americans. We vacationed at the all-inclusive Maeva Resort, staying two separate times for 10 nights. There's a Club Med in Huatulco, but the scuba diving was not included, so we chose the Maeva. Being one of the few all-inclusive resorts to do so, the choice was an easy one for us. We paid a visit to Club Med, about twice the size of our resort. After seeing both, I still prefer the Maeva.
Our days were mainly spent diving in the morning and relaxing in the afternoon. One time we went out on an all-day catamaran sail. Another time, we rented a car. But the majority of our time was spent on the beach or by the pool, which was what we wanted. We had friends who went to Huatulco and were bored silly the week they spent there. It's not for everyone. There are a couple of nightclubs and several excellent restaurants. But most people go there to relax. Staying at an all-inclusive resort is the way to go, in my opinion.
The Maeva resort was very accommodating. Our ocean view room was large and comfortable. We had a king size bed and a small sitting area, that included a TV with cable. Although not huge, our bathroom was equipped with a full bath, a variety of toiletries and fresh flowers everyday. The hotel had activities scheduled well into the evening, including nightly entertainment. The food was excellent, and included room service. I had breakfast in bed every morning. During both trips, we were the only ones on the dive boat. The scuba diving was better than what we had experienced in Puerto Vallarta, but no where near that of Cozumel. A few snorkelers were allowed to tag along, and seemed to enjoy themselves very much. There was also a daily afternoon boat trip out to a snorkeling site, near Club Med.
There were pool games and beach volleyball scheduled throughout the day. We went into La Crucesita (a nearby town) to do some shopping and purchased black Oaxacan pottery. We also went into a few boutiques in Huatulco to pick up some tee shirts. Huatulco just doesn't have the same atmosphere you'd find in Cancun or Puerto Vallarta.
Huatulco, in my opinion, makes for a perfect, stress-free honeymoon. It's also great for those of you wanting to relax on the beach. The biggest complaint we heard was that there wasn't enough night life or things to do. The few American's I spoke with were expecting a Cancun-like atmosphere, which really isn't what you will find here. The Mexican government lost some foreign investments and so the development has slowed. There are several very nice resorts here, many of which are all inclusive, including Club Med. We went in early summer, but I'm told the winter months have the best weather and lowest humidity. The ocean visibility is best in the summer, around 80+ feet.
For those of you wanting to enjoy a relaxing week on the beach, Huatulco is a dream come true. Early June seems to attract fewer crowds, and little rain, making for the best visibility if you're looking to dive, and lowest cost. Good luck!
