I had heard that Oaxaca was Mexico's most romantic city from a friend of mine. Upon arriving in Oaxaca I didn't understand what my friend was referring to. It was not until leaving Oaxaca that I began to miss it's cultural and historical beauty. The city is the largest in the state, but still small enough to be considered a "town".
Oaxaca and its surroundings have enough things to keep people occupied for at least three days... A day trip to Monte Alban is a must for all those that are interested in ancient arts. Monte Alban sits atop the city and features beautiful ruins.
The city of Oaxaca itself is also very entertaining. There always seem to be teenagers hanging out near the Zocolo, or center of town, and people are friendly and seem to be generally relaxed the whole time. One of the best parts of Oaxaca is the fact that it isn't completely overrun by American tourists and overpriced resorts... I'd guess that there is a strong percentage of indigenous Oaxacans, which gives the interested traveller a different view of Mexico.
Plus, the food in Oaxaca is EXCELLENT! The quesillo (Oaxacan string cheese) is excellent at any time of day, as is the mole (chocolate sauce?). The third food speciality of Oaxaca is grasshoppers, and while I didn't try any, I've heard that they are quite tasty.
