TJ Mexico what you hear about this place is true. When I was 18 years old I was living in Long Beach California, me and some friends decided to take a trip down to TJ Mexico to check out all the bargain shopping that we heard so much about.
So we drove down to San Diego to the Navy Base, and from there we caught the Trolley that would take us to the boarder of USA and Mexico.
The Trolley ride only took around 25 minutes. Once we arrived at the boarder I got off the trolley and was very surprised. I had no idea that there would be shops and even a McDonalds to eat at. We decided we would eat before we took off on our adventure to TJ Mexico. I have to say McDonalds even at the boarder line taste just the same as anywhere else.
I was kind of scared to take this journey to this new place; I heard so many bad things that can go wrong while you are there. So we decided to be extra cautious.
We began our long walk over the boarder to TJ, when you first go into TJ if you are you have to cross over this big long brick bridge to get across. While you take this walk you will see many children and their parents along the way. They are sitting along the side of the walkway begging for money, or asking you to buy some cigarettes, or Chiclets.
Once we arrived over the boarder I couldn't believe what else I was seeing. The place was dirty and polluted and stunk. There were so many children and mothers just lying on the streets crying or asking for money everywhere I looked you could see how much poverty those people were in. I felt so bad for those children who were asking for money and hanging out a bowl to collect it with. So of course I had to give money to the children.
We finally made our way down to where all the streets are, and the local bars and resteraunt. There were tons upon tons of little shops and little flea market style huts to shop in. The cloths and merchandise were a reasonable price to pay, but you could always get them to lower the sale price. It was hard to speak to the people since I didn't understand their language. But they knew if we walked away from what they were trying to sale us, then they would start to lower the price of the product.
One thing to not do while you is in TJ Mexico and that is NEVER drink the water their, cause of the pollution and unsanitary reasons. Always drink something that is bottled. I would prefer not to eat there either.
At each corner of the street you could find a man with a donkey and a carriage asking people if they wanted their picture taken. So we decided that would be cool. We got together and they even gave us those straw Mexican hats to wear in our photo. The cost of the photo was only $5.00.
Now we wanted to check out those local clubs. So we went into one that was called "Bambinos". The place was dark and full of smoke. We managed to find a table to sit at. While we were sitting they're having a drink, over came this woman; she started to put the moves on one of our guy friends that was with us. I couldn't believe it. Here the place we were in was a strip bar. We drank our drinks fast and got out. The rest of the clubs we went to ended up being the same things. Finally we found a place outside that was open. No girls striping there so that is where we sat for a few hours to rest and drink.
Oh did I mention in TJ Mexico as long as you can see over the bar they will serve you. We though that was pretty cool since we was only 18 years old.
As far as my adventure to this place, I have to say I did enjoy it. The town was a lot different then what I'm use to, but it sure was a challenge to see what you could buy there and at a lower rate then you would be able to get it for in the USA.
I would recommend any one who wants an adventure and a new way of life to visit this place. Just be cautious and don't get into trouble. There is nothing like being sent to a Mexican prison.
The weather when I was there was during the summer time and it was nice and hot. I would suggest maybe taking along with you a sun hat and sunglasses and dress in normal cloths.
When it was time to leave TJ Mexico I think that was the scariest part of the whole trip. You have to go through Customs and they will check all your things and you have to have an ID to prove you are an American to get back over the boarder. When we was leaving I looked across the room in the Customs Department and through this glass window, I could see this American lady and a small Mexican boy with her. It seemed like she was having a hard time. I don't know if she was trying to bring this child across the boarder or not and got caught, but it sure did scare me.
They will also check you for drugs as well. I also have to add that the people were friendly to us, we had no troubles while we were there except for those strip clubs.
