Mother Chu's Taiwanese Gourmet

Situated in the heart of Chinatown, Mother Chu's Taiwanese Gourmet one of my favourite places for lunch. This is Taiwanese fast food for the Asian community and not the usual anglicized Chinese cuisine you may be used to.
The restaurant works on the fast in, fast out method, so don't expect a leisurely lunch relaxing over coffee and dessert. The staff is quick, friendly and efficient, if occasionally a little flustered by the huge lunch-time rush — this is one busy little restaurant.
It is also quite small, so you may want to reconsider before arriving with a group of more than 6-8 people. Expect to pay between A$6-12 for lunch, depending on whether you select vegetarian or meat and seafood dishes.
The menu covers such items as Yu Tiao (a fried pastry) and Savoury Pancakes for breakfast to Seaweed and Tofu and Stir-Fried Green Vegetables for main meal items, as well as a large selection of dumplings and steamed buns for entrees. The restaurant has many vegetarian dishes and is also friendly to vegans.
It is a fun place for a culinary adventure if you like picking unfamiliar items from the menu. A word of warning, if something is listed as Beef Tendon, it will look like beef tendon when you get it — it is quite tasty though.
If you'd prefer something a little more upmarket, try Mother Chu's Vegetarian Kitchen in Pitt St, Sydney and Cleveland St, Surry Hills.
