The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium is in danger of closing its doors forever. The Brisbane City Council, which operates the facility, claims that it is running at a loss and that necessary upgrades and maintenance are too costly and uneconomical. The councils many opponents to the proposal say otherwise. Yes, they willingly accept that there is a financial aspect to Council's decision, but truthfully, the operating loss isn't significant. If the news reports are correct, and I have no reason to doubt their validity, if each person in the city contributed an extra twenty cents per year, the loss would be eliminated. I for one would happily part with that amount many times over to see the continuation of this wonderful facility. Presumably, judging by the many outraged opponents to the move, so would many other people.
Why then does BCC want to close the planetarium? Responsible management does not end on the bottom line of a financial statement. The city's finances can easily overcome the small cost burden of the planetarium. Responsible management must include the provision of educational tools for students and general public alike. The planetarium provides this service. For years we have seen governments around the world saying that the way to advancement is through science and technology. Seeing the awe on student's faces as they are given a taste of the wonders of science is an unforgettable experience. Apparently, Brisbane is no longer in need of such a facility. Apparently, Brisbane is no longer in need of an effective educational attraction. Apparently, Brisbane is no longer in need of a worthwhile future.
Around the world, including within Australia, recent months have seen an increase of planetaria being constructed. The Brisbane City Council decides to go against the trend and cease operations of its own. As we head toward the end of Science Week, we need to reverse Council's decision, and let them know we are not going to stand idly by and watch them dismantle an integral part of this city's heritage.
Please encourage any interested parties to read this opinion, and to comment on Council's decision. Comments will be printed and forwarded to the Brisbane City Council.
