| RayneStorm's Full Review: Brisbane |
As the slogan for Queensland says, "Beautiful one day, perfect the next". As the capital city of Queensland, the same must be said of Brisbane. Having once lived in Brisbane for approximately seven years, one could say I am a little biased towards this city, but it also gives me the ability to write about the different points of interest here and what it is about this city that makes it so special.
For many years, Brisbane was considered to be nothing more than a large country town, but its growth over the years has seen Brisbane become a bustling city. Brisbane is situated in the southeast corner of Queensland, just north of the Gold Coast and south of the Sunshine Coast. The Brisbane River, adding to the town's beauty separates the city.
In the past, many tourists have visited the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast forgetting about the beauty that can be found in Brisbane itself. The city houses many beautiful parks, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the sun. Each Sunday, markets are held along the banks of the Brisbane River and the stalls offer some great, original products. Even if nothing is purchased, simply walking throughout the markets and then onto the gardens in town makes for a great day.
Just a few miles from the city itself is the Sir Thomas Brisbane planetarium. While this may seem a little "dorky" to some, the shows that are offered here are not only educational but also very entertaining. Even those that do not have much interest in astronomy walk out of the show staring at the night sky in search of all that they had previously been shown.
In 1988, Brisbane played host to the World Expo. The site that was used for the expo has since been converted to gardens, now known as Southbank, which also contains a stage for various acts, a salt water swimming pool, stores and other exhibits. Brisbane's cultural center (art gallery and museum) is within walking distance from Southbank. As you may be able to tell from the name, Southbank is situated on the southern bank of the Brisbane River, with the city center just a short walk across the bridge, or a short ferry ride away.
As I said earlier, Brisbane is situated about half way between the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, which means that there are plenty of day trips that can be taken from the city. There are also a number of national parks within close proximity to the city. These areas are home to wonderful rainforests that must be seen to be believed.
