Our trip to Australia took in Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns but it was Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef that topped our list. The day we went to the reef was magical, I couldn't have wished for a better day. The clown fish, the clams, the colours - we have so many photos - we took a sail boat, called Wavedancer ($US97), which I was not expecting but sailing was definitely enjoyable. Our mistake was not booking ahead, as we couldn't go on the day we hoped, it was a slight problem. We found them at www.great-barrier-reef.au.com
What we didn't know, was they also have some amazing rainforest only an hour away or so. We went to Kuranda, went on a gondala above the treetops, went in a Hummer into the rainforest & Steve our guide was just full of amazing information. This tour we found on another website called www.kuranda.au.com
It's our experience, from a previous trip, that local websites seem to give you a very honest description & that bit more information. Our trip to Australia, proved that it was worth the research on the internet, especially when some of the tours we traveled on, only took 6 people or so, and so were booked out.
Our other highlight was going ballooning. I have always wanted to and with our dollar in Australia, it was a bargain ($85). The kangaroos and the birdlife we saw from the basket really made our morning, we just wished we had taken a third roll of film. The company was a family owned one, so friendly, it was called Hot Air. We found them at www.hotair.com.au The pilot and our driver were full of information - have an early night the night prior, because it really is worth it to be wide awake when you take this tour. We stayed at a motel, very very simple, so that we could spend up on our day trips. Our only regret was not spending time in Port Douglas, it looked like fun.
