Australia is awesome. It is an order of magnitude different from anywhere else in the world. We flew to Sydney and got a rental car and took one month and 10,000 kilometers to tour the east coast. If you can afford the time I strongly recommend this to everyone. Except for automobile expenses, rental and gasoline, everything else is surprisingly affordable. Food and clean, comfortable lodging cost us less than running the car!
Do plenty of your own research and pick up a good map. The roads outside the major cities are poorly marked, if marked at all. We bought a road atlas for around $20.00 when we got in country and it was well worth it.
Our itinerary, briefly-as I think you should do your own research, was south from Sydney down the coast, then west to Melbourne and north through the Snowy Mountains and east to Canberra. Back north to the Blue Mountains and around Sydney and up to Brisbane and then north to the Gold Coast and the Barrier Reef to the Daintree. Back south to Sydney where we stopped for a week, dumped the car and used public transport to rest up before heading home.
Plan plenty of small side trips into the interior; New England was beautiful and the country is full of spectacular waterfalls and parks.
Drive carefully. Secondary roads are really that. In Queensland these are about 1 and a-half lanes wide and speed limits were about 65mph (110kph). You have to pull over on the shoulder to avoid oncoming traffic. It is a little like playing chicken in a tank!
Try to stay at a couple of the small town pub-hotels. These are a bit noisy until the afterwork drinkers go home, but the locals are friendly, love Americans and it is a great way to get a bit of a feel for how the people live.
I will write specific reviews for specific sites to visit. But one of the great ways of travelling this way is you can do what you want and not what others tell you to do. Hey, you can end up seeing something no one else would imagine visiting unless you tell them to do it!
