| big_loser's Full Review: Australia |
I got a letter in the mail for a chance to tour New Zealand and Australia. It was from the Student Ambasitor group for the US, PEOPLE TO PEOPLE. After an introductory meeting, an interview, and many forms, I was ready to go. Here are the things that i found special, different, and really cool about the land most Americans never get to see...
-The Money Issue- The one i am sure many people are concerned about. While many things may look expensive, they really are about 40% less than they seem (in New Zealand it is 2 NZ for 1 US). CDs are around $24 for them, making them around or a little below our CDs. So, it really does pay to go to Australia.
-The Native Life- Here I am talking about both flora, fauna, and people. All these things create a atmosphere unique to only Australia,. The people there are extremely hospitable and nice. They have very cool accents to boot. I found that they were always ready to help you as much as they could.
The wild life in Australia is also beyond comprehension. You have nearly all pouched mammals living there, the platypus, great white sharks, and many great types of plant life. While in the country I fed Kangaroos, held a koala, SCUBA dived at the Great Barrier Reef, and did heaps of other stuff that can only be done in Australia. The fact of how much I was allowed to partake and be involved with the wild life, deeply affected my enjoyment of the country for the better.
-The Sites- Australia has many, many sites unique to only Australia. Several good examples are the Sydney Opra House, The Olympic site for the coming 2000 Olympic games, and awesome Opal Mines. These places and more combined make Australia a great tourist country.
-The Things That Aren't So Great- Here are the things that I did not love too much about Australia. The first and main thing that i did not enjoy was the fact that it was their winter in July. I was too cold most of the time, and my summer attire, which i had packed did not work too well to keep me warm. Another thing that i dont like too much was the really, really long flights (Yes it is flights, because, unless you live on the west coast, you have to fly to LA and then to Australia.) The flight to the actual country, is around 12 to 13 hours!!! Qantas is very hospitable and shows some good movies though, so dont worry too much. The jet lag is also a pain. The way you figure out east coast time there is by subtracting 2 hours and changing AM to PM... crazy stuff.
This is a great trip for students and I learned a lot. Also being a teen, i was not too affected by the jet-lag. Australia has a lot to offer the Northern part of the world, and i suggest/hope that at one point in most peoples life's, they get to go. I hope to go back soon too.
