| kiaorana's Full Review: Bora Bora |
Spent 2 nights at the Bora Bora Eden Beach Resort right before New Years. I must say that I loved it but would not stay there longer as there is nothing else to do except watersports. I paid $112 and that was a considerable discount since my rate minus the 10% discount was originally $190. It helped that the hotel was not fully booked.
I stayed in a beach bungalow with a view of Mt. Otemanu from the deck. The bungalow is quite small with a queen size bed and 2 bamboo chairs and a table. There is no mini bar and I don't believe there is room for one. The bedside lamps are made up of bamboo and are in such an weird position that you have to pull the bed away from the wall in order not the bang your head against the sharp edge of the lamps. Rooms are quite clean. and the bathroom is not too small.Shower, toilet and a sink with lots of counter space. There was also no soapdish, so I had to reach over and place it on the counter. I also liked the fact that there were screens on the windows to keep out the mosquitoes.
The food at the restaurant was the best that I had in Bora Bora besides the Hotel Bora Bora. There was not too many guest there as the hotel has recently opened. I heard that Pearl Beach Resort owns 30% of the hotel but it is hard to find it on their website. The restaurant is open air with a bar. Meals were not too expensive and they made you feel like you were part of the family. At the time American breakfast was included in the rate. That will not be so in 2002 unless they changed it.
The hotel has a small swimming pool, which was also nice because to actually swim in the lagoon you would have to venture out pretty far to get to waist high water and by the time you got there your legs were tired. The water is this many shades of blue and green. They pick you up by boat from the airport and the same guy Teiva is the one who takes you on the tour. I only did the shark feeding and stingray with him. He is a great guy and his prices are reasonable. Paid $37 for the 1/2 day shark feeding.
He takes you out on a bayliner which holds 8 passengers to some spot for great snorkeling. His partner Jean whom I kept on call Juan for some reason dove into the water with a chunk of fish and out came the biggest moray eel that I had ever seen, from underneath a rock. Well besides the aquarium, that was the only time that I had seen one. We then headed out towards the reef and stopped to hang out with the stingrays. That was my first encounter with sting rays and at first I was a bit nervous. Well the adventurous side of me came out and off I jumped into the water. The rays would swim up to you which was cool, but they were a bit slimmy. The tail on the other hand was real rough. We stay there for about 30 minutes then headed outside the reef where we encountered those great white sharks. Just kidding! They were a bunch of reef shark swimming for food. Tieva fed them and stopped after a while because he said that he noticed Lemon sharks at the bottom and that could get a bit dicey if they surfaced. Anyway the water was a bit rough and I was happy to get out of there because I was feeling a bit queezy due to the rocking of the boat. Had the water been calmer, I would have been in it. We stopped at his family motu where he climbed the tree to get coconuts. On the way back he had a spread of the juiciest pineaples and bananas for us. I would recommend this trip.
The next day some friends went back and they said that it was not good at all. It had poured the night before and there was lots of dead fish in the lagoon. It has to do with the fresh water combining with the lagoon water.
We were told that prior to our arrival, it had rained 3 weeks straight. I just felt bad for the ones who did that Paul Gaugauin cruise on Christmas week. They only had 2 decent days.
I would recommend Bora Bora to all. I did not however do the circle island by road. I tried to rent a scooter but I almost collided into a wall so that was the end of that.
