We spent a week long vacation at a condo called The Pines at Alpine Bay. This resort is located near the Logan Martin Lake, which is right outside
the city of Birmingham. One of the resort's main activity was golf and this did not fit into everyone's vacation plans , since we had our two daughters who were in their teens. Our resort had an outside swimming pool and offered fishing on the lake.
We all decided that we wanted to see the Talladega Speedway which was about twenty-five miles from where we were staying. When we visited this speedway, we really enjoyed the Nascar Hall of Fame which had a lot of the beautiful racecars and different information on displays about the famous racecar drivers. We even got to take a lap around the speedway in their van and get a feeling for how fast the racecars must go to drive on the outside lanes of the banks. I believe we paid about $5 per person to enjoy this unusual venture.
Our resort was about one hour drive away from the city of Birmingham. We found some small diners that served fried green tomatoes and fried frog legs. My husband was the only one who ate the frog legs, but most of their food is country homestyle cooking. We live in West Virginia, and you cannot find a local restaurant that serves fried frog legs or country cooking. Most of our local restaurants are chains and the menus are all alike.
Another place that we visited that was within a fifty-mile radius of Birmingham is a small town called Boaz, Alabama. This entire town was made of the largest selection of outlet stores that we have ever been to. What was so great about these outlet stores was that their prices were better than most of the chainlink outlet malls that we were familiar with. My husband had a difficult time getting all three of us girls in the car to go back to the resort because we were in "outlet heaven"!
We also drove one day to the city of Birmingham. They had a very large mall which was the Eastwood Mall. This mall had a large hotel that was connected to the stores. They had a lot of upper class stores which were not in our price range, but they were still wonderful to browse around in them.
We went on this vacation in July and the temperatures got up in the upper ninties with high humidity. I think that it would have been more enjoyable if we had gone earlier in the summer before it gets so hot.
The only drawback on this trip was that our resort was not located close to anything and we had to drive quite a distance to even get to a grocery store. I would recommend this 18-hole Robert Trent Jones golf course to anyone that enjoys playing golf or just having a relaxing vacation away from the crowds. We think that Alabama is a beautiful state and we really enjoyed the people we met there.
