Wow! What a beautiful piece of writing! :) You really made Fairbanks SHINE!

P.S.
I haven't had to whip the DEET out for a couple weeks, thank goodness.

This is really memoir more than "travel article." I learned a great deal. Thanks for the introduction.

Well, it proves you can make a home anywhere ... (Reply to this comment)

I've still not been to Alaska, but I've been inundated by professional writing about all of its most scenic regions -- in fact, I think I've read incredible, alluring things about almost every part of the state except, well, Fairbanks. Guidebooks certainly give the town low marks for civic beauty, though a few do note the not-entirely-mercenary (as you so well put it) kindness of the people.
I could never survive the swings of light and the nation's widest recorded annual temperature extremes, but you offer a splendid manual for coping. Should life deposit me in Fairbanks, I'll take this as my guide.
Cheers

Dear Kristin,
I wish I'd had the pleasure of reading your delightful essay earlier. You've added sparkle to a write-off that already gleamed. Thank you, both for writing this and for organizing so enjoyable an event. Well done.
Best wishes,
Peter

Lure of the North (Reply to this comment)
by vanne
Hi Kristin,
I have a friend who is homesick for her old home up in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Living on the balmy west coast of B.C. I often wondered why she missed it so much, but one day she convinced me with her childhood stories of the true beauty of the North. Sounds like you have experienced this too. Thanks for sharing with us.

I don't know if my blood would thicken enough to stand the Alaskan winters either, but it sounds like a lovely place to visit. :)

My favorite (Reply to this comment)

times of year are Summer Solstice and Winter solstice! Heck, I just love it when someone knows what they are! Great writing, and it truly painted a picture of your beloved Alaska. My Grandparents lived up there for awhile after Vietnam,(the army sent them...), and I never got to visit up there. I've always wanted to see it, now I really have to!
Great writing!

my blood would ever manage to thicken sufficiently for -35° temperatures, but you still manage to make Fairbanks sound alluring. I'm determined to see the Northern Lights some day, and I guess that means winter. Brrr! Sets my teeth to chattering just thinking about it.
Beautiful review!

Beautifully written, Kristin. Between the pieces written by you and Ben for the write-off, I'm ready to get on a plane this afternoon. At the very least, I wanna get a pair of those bunny boots.

Fairbanks. The spring, summer, fall part sounds wonderful, but I can't even deal with winter here in southern Wisconsin.
I kept thinking of "Northern Exposure" while I was reading this and wondered if you would portray any of your fair (pun intended) city's kooks and characters. Maybe in another ramble.
Enjoyed reading your piece and was sorry I couldn't participate.

I always wondered (Reply to this comment)

what happened up in Fairbanks all year. I went up in early June one time, the lawns were already green, and it snowed of all things. One other time I visited was in winter and I got to see the amazing ice sculptures.
Anyway, I don't think you need to edit anything out of your review. It was great!
Thanks for hosting this great write-off (first one I've participated in) and I look forward to any others you concoct.

to visit Alaska and you have made it sound very appealing. I kick myself for not going when my BIL lived there for three years (he was in the Air Force).
Maybe someday :)
Thanks for hosting this great write off and allowing me to participate. I really enjoyed writing and reading everyone's epinions.

You stayed up just for me??? I'm so flattered. Sorry this one rambled on so...
We started with 19 participants, but one had to withdraw. Everything I've read so far has been just wonderful. By serendipity we seem to have covered all the bases (sunscreen, bug stuff, gardening, beaches, etc.) without overlapping.
Thanks for reading this behemoth! Kristin
