Seriously... Alaskans are real people. Real people eat meat. Not the bleeding heart Cali imports obviously. Unfortunately, a good percentage of Californians would rather just whine about how primitive Alaskans are for eating that "poor fishie" Simply comical! This author made my day...keep the laughs coming! (but please stay in California;)

Phenomenal review, Eric! (Reply to this comment)

I felt like I was knee-deep in an uglier version of Northern Exposure. I'll avoid Nome at all costs, expecially since you already succeeded in bringing me there. And I didn't take any offense, in spite of the fact that my cousins are Polar Bears.
Thanks!

wow! I'm surprised at such angry comments! I thought it was an informative review from one person's perspective and if I wanted to go there, I might read more on it, but I thought you did a great job of expressing your opinion of what you experienced.
Thanks.

Should you be allowed outside? (Reply to this comment)

The biggest problem with the Birkenstock tourist is the misguided notion that the world is a giant theme park. It isn't, most people live in areas that you don't have to, and they survive. They do not have the luxury of wandering all over the world as an unhappy, pampered idiot complaining that it doesn't sufficiently accomodate their peculiar notions of right and wrong. It is the height of arrogance to criticize the way people live if it doesn't measure up to your "ideal" existence.
Next time, go to Disneyland. They probably sell granola at every hot-dog stand.

Give Alaska another chance (Reply to this comment)

I really enjoyed your review of Nome but I wish you had not caved to the tourism hype and gone to Nome to begin with. We live in a little place just off the Parks Highway called Trapper Creek. Talkeetna home of the Moose Dropping festival is just down the road. Between the two communities and outlying areas there are less than 1000 people. This is real rural living. The thing about getting to know Alaska is getting off the main track...stop in the little stores along parks Highway and take some detours like off Pettersville road. I hope you come again and meet some folks like those I know.

Seems so sad... (Reply to this comment)

...that one can visit such a historical town, and come away with so little.
