Experience a peace of the past.
What an appropriate motto for Tanyard Springs, Ark. Take a scenic drive just a few hours north of Shreveport, and you feel like you are thousands of miles away from everything but nature and yourself. This incomparable hideaway, created by a psychologist, is atop Petit Jean Mountain near Morrilton.
Your cabin on the settlement has no television or telephone. Electrical wires and air ducts are tastefully hidden from view. It is loaded with such amenities as a furnished kitchen (except dishwasher), central heat and air, linens, cedar closets, outdoor grill and eating area and muscadine juice.
Bring food, foil, a chopping board and a guitar.
The Adrienne Dumont Cabin has a porch swing in front of the fireplace, a loft bedroom with queen-sized bed, split level living and eating areas and draping dogwoods outdoors.
Dumont was the fiancee of a French explorer who came to America in the late 1700s who told her to await his return. She could not bear the separation and disguised herself as a cabin boy named Petit Jean. She took ill after arriving, died on the mountain and is buried there in an unmarked grave.
The front door of the romantic Dumont cabin, weighing 600 pounds, has hinges of black wrought iron with hearts. The rock landing on the sidewalk and shower--with sprays at each end-- are heart shaped.
Other facilities in the 13-cabin settlement feature their own personality and a touch of the historic past. Some are more family oriented.
While at Tanyard Springs visit the Cedar Falls, scenic overlooks, hiking trails and Museum of Automobiles featuring President Clinton's 1967 powder blue Mustang convertible. The car museum has a privately owned antique and classic collection of legends. The museum was founded by the late Arkansas Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller.
We also saw deer and heard coyotes during our January visit and "listened for the spirit of Petit Jean," as legend says, on our ventures.
