I highly recommend this jewel called The Barnabey Hotel. I have been flying Los Angeles trips this month, and finally got to see what the flight attendants have been raving about.
It is conveinently located two miles from LAX , so if you are just passing through, you should really give this place a try. (I can't forsee planning a vacation in Los Angeles either!) Since I AM the hotel queen, I will tell you about comfort and accomodations----so look no further for hotel ratings!!
When you leave the outside world on Sepulveda Boulevard, you will feel that you have been taken back to the sixteenth century as you find your way to your luxurious room. The richly decorated walls are lined with pictures from The Tudor period. Being a lover of this era, I recognized all of Henry's six wives on the wall framed in rich gold leaf frames. The rooms are as ecclectic as Henry's tastes in his wives were!!
I have been there three times now, and have gotten a different room on each occasion to my surprise and immense satisfaction! Each room has it's own personality in the bed department, one having a piece of "fluffy heaven" sitting so high, you will need to use the step ladder to reach it! Or, your bed could be surrounded by a rich canopy befitting of a queen! Needless to say, the mattress will not disappoint you in any room.....they are of the highest quality, lined with a feather mattress to boot. The bedding is immaculate and the comforters are all down. I have never seen a stain on anything.....could it be that the natives appreciate this type of accomodation to the point of actually trying to be careful and not mess it up? Must be something to that theory, since the rooms are stocked full of bookshelves with many impressive reads, mostly hardbacks full of short stories. I admit being tempted to take one, but just couldn't bring myself to do so.....I mean how many hotels have this much taste?
I will tell you that the building is an older structure, so you will most likely hear your neighbors if they are obnoxious. You could possibly hear a "creak" when you walk across your floor also, but it wouldn't get five stars for ambience from me without it!
The bathrooms are clean and well kept, providing an adequate amount of towels and tolietries. The floors and vanities are Mexican tile, and always clean enough to see yourself in. The only downfall, I have found the coffee maker in the bathroom on the vanity on a couple of occasions.......can't deal with that! They do serve Wolfgang Puck coffee to make up for it though.
Most rooms overlook a beautiful terrace that is lined with beautiful flowering bushes and fountains. Request the room with the large balcony if you want a romantic setting for two!
They offer you an award winning restaurant where you will most definately rub elbows with the famous. The setting is more of the rich English grandeur that I have spoken of. They have oval shaped booths with heavy draperies for those that want privacy. There are "private" rooms for those that want extra privacy, unfortunately, I can't comment on those. I DID get to meet Bonnie Rait and pet her poodle, (WHOOPIE!! you say), as she was leaving a couple of weeks ago.
I have had the exceptional experience of eating breakfast there two times and have been extremely satisfied on both occasions. The waiters are very conscious of your needs, (I have had the same one both times), and remember faces!
The pub is a very popular meeting place also.
It is a very rare occasion when I find a hotel that I can rave about in my travels, but this is a keeper!! I only hope United "keeps" putting us up there!! I can only compare it to one other out there, and that is The Wort Hotel in Jackson Hole. There is a review on this jewel also.
I can't accurately comment on the prices, my company pays the bill.
So, when in L.A. and need a hotel close to LAX, I highly recommend The Barnabey.
Enjoy!!
