Every time we go to San Francisco it seems we continue to find wonderful, inexpensive hotels. Actually, my wife read of The Andrews Hotel in a Budget Travel article. (I have written Epinions on two other San Francisco hotels -- the San Remo &, Bohieme Hotel)
The Andrews Hotel is located at 624 Post. This is next to Union Square. Reservations can be made by calling (415) 563-6877. I do not know how old this classic hotel is, but it is well kept.
Upon entering the lobby to register I was immediately comfortable. The inviting, warm, hospitable atmosphere is no accident. The furnishings are simple and comfortable. Large windows face the street & let in massive amounts of light.
The old fashioned elevator to our 5th floor room was carpeted in a attractive decor. The elevator was a God send, as the stairwell is very steep. But then it is San Francisco.
Our room had the best bed I think I have ever experienced in a hotel. It was either brand new, or, the hotel bought quality beds.
The decor of the room was very pleasant. The overhead light looked like a huge palm leaf. The colors of the room were attractive; light peach tones. The bathroom shower was very small, but perfectly clean. The room was 100% clean.
The Andrews Hotel throws in breakfast with the rate. Breakfast is provided for each floor. A hallway desk is loaded up with coffee, bananas, apples, doughnuts, orange juice, and other goodies. There are serving trays to place your breakfast onto, &, soon you are back in your room with morning coffee, etc.
The central location of the Andrews Hotel is handy. We easily walked a couple blocks to Union Square, caught a $2 trolleycar to Fishermans' Wharf. We also took an evening walk to both Chinatown & North Beach -- about 20 minutes from the hotel. We used BART to get into the city, from Oakland Airport. We walked from the BART Embarcadero station to the Andrews Hotel in about 20 minutes.
The other hotels we have stayed at in North Beach have their qualities -- but for us I think we have found our favorite San Francisco hotel. The price, location, decor, and friendly staff at The Andrews Hotel are a winning combination.
