There is no such thing as a free lunch ...
... but how about a cheap lunch (or dinner)? In fact, some of the best food in SF is found in the holes-in-the-wall, tucked away in some alley way, with almost no signs. A good example of this is Chinatown, which is peppered with well-kept secrets. (No secrets after this epinion, though!)
What's "cheap"? Well, any place where one person can eat for $10 or less, including tax & tips, but excluding alcoholic beverages. Some places are usually cheaper than that - especially their lunch specials, so you might
have some money left over for your bus fare! So here goes:
MEXICAN
La Taqueria (Mission)
A well known place in the city despite its location in an unsavory part of the Mission, this place churns out great burritos and has real awesome salsa on its tables. Some claim this to have the best burritos in the city.
La Corneta Taqueria (Glen Park)
This is a neighborhood Mexican place, churning out really good stuff - and it's a lot more than just plain old tacos & burritos. Try their hot & spicy prawns entree - for just $7.95 - and you will be coming back for more. Added bonus: this place is pretty clean and airy, and the service is friendly and efficient.
CHINESE
House of Nanking (Chinatown)
Okay, I will admit - I'm not a big fan of this place. This is the best-known hole-in-the-wall in Chinatown, achieving an almost celebrity status, thanks to rave reviews from critics and locals alike. The food's great here, and it's cheap, but the service tends to be rude and the place is small enough for you to feel like a sardine.
You's Dim Sum (Chinatown)
I won't rate this is as one of the best dim sums in the city, but it has a very authentic feel to it and we've really enjoyed it. There are no English descriptions of the dim sums - you just go up to the counter and point. So you got to be a little adventurous, and you're not likely to be disappointed.
INDIAN
Shalimar (Downtown)
Totally disorganized, bad lighting, bad neighborhood. But if good, cheap Indian food is what you're looking for, Shalimar is the place. Great Indian bread (naan), and curries - but make that to go please.
