Wow, I'm having a really cool post-apocalypic vision of Hobee's

Pros: Coffeecake, easy parking, quiet enough to talk
Cons: It's a diner, and not a very pretentious one at that.

Hobee's is a little chain of diners in California. Their main culinary claim to fame is their coffee cake (recommended), which is a big tasty square of cake with a crumb topping. They serve breakfast all day and a variety of dinner food all not particularly remarkable but a step above your random unknown diner cuisine. The particular one I'm referring to is in the Town and Country shopping center in Palo Alto, but it could be anywhere.
One of the nice things about travelling is getting to visit people that you know and if you do things right introducing people who don't know each other yet. Hobee's is a nice place to do that. It was easy for a group of nine of us to get a table, the food was not so expensive or elaborate as to distract from the dinner conversation, and there were more than enough menu options to accomodate a wide variety of tastes. And, unlike most California restaurants I seem to frequent, it was actually quiet enough that nine opinionated people could have one conversation without having to shout.
Good for groups, good for breakfast, you wouldn't make it a destination of your visit but the locals do seem to like it too.
