Your trip sounds like our trip to Colorado Springs 10 years ago. My husband and I (no kids yet) were only going to stop to go to Pikes Peak and then head on back East toward our homestate of West Virginia. It turned into a whole day and at 11 pm that night found a room. We made the most of our one day stop in Colorado Springs. Next summer we are taking our kids to Colorado and plan to spend several days in/near Colorado Springs. Can't Wait!
