Every now and then, my wife and I pack up the family and head to Rehoboth beach. It is about a 2-hour drive from our house and a good way to spend a nice lazy summer day. I have never stayed in Rehoboth for longer than a day, so if you are looking for information on lodging, resorts, this isn't the Epinion for you.
First, parking is pretty easy--especially if you get there early. There is metered parking right on Rehoboth Ave, at most about a 5-min walk to the beach. The cost of meter parking is 75 cents and hour, with a limit of three hours. So be sure and remember to go back and put some coins in the meter.
The beach itself is rather small. If you get there early or at a non-peak time and steak out a good spot, then you are OK. I usually get there about 8:30 AM. Along with being small, Rehoboth is also usually very crowded, so be prepared to share the ocean with others. If you want seclusion, this is not the spot for you. Also, on my most recent trip (today) there was a considerable amount of trash on the beach. As I walked off the boardwalk and stepped onto the beach, there were literally piles of trash. Maybe this was because it was still early, and this was refuse that had been collected overnight, but still it should be disposed of promptly. Also, as I walked toward the prime area of the beach, there was plenty of trash in the sand such as cigarette buts, food wrappers, etc. I have been to Ocean City, MD many times and have never seen the beach so dirty.
Rehoboth has a Boardwalk that I really like. It is not too long or over done such as the one in Ocean City, MD. There are plenty of little shops and places to eat. Grotto's Pizza is a local favorite and a place I recommend you give a try. There are also several little food places where you can get beach fries, ice cream, salt water taffy, etc.
If you have some extra time, there are several outlet stores located just up Route 1. If you like to shop, this is a must stop. You will find almost all major brand names and stores represented.
So if you are looking for a decent place to have some summer fun, Rehoboth is a nice place to visit. I just hope they work on cleaning up that beach.
