Lucky me, working in FL during the annual soap opera weekend at MGM. I had never heard of soap opera weekend, never mind that it was an annual event. So I looked up online just who from the one and only soap I watch (AMC) who was going to be there. Well, Michael Knight was going to be there, and guess what so was I.
So bright and early Saturday morning we head off to MGM. Grabbing up a schedule as soon as we are through the gates.......Where's Tad going to be? That's the way I'm heading. I was merely hoping to be able to see him, see him I did up close and personal, will get to that shortly.
Each star was assigned a certain area to appear and sign autographs, just my luck Tad was at the back of the park. Running is not what I do best, and in the hot burning sun, I do it less..........or should I say I did it good that day?
By the time we reached Tad's station there was already a huge line, didn't stop us from falling into place.
Finally a scream erupts from the crowd and Tad emerges. What a looker, and dressed nicely. Black leisure suit, white sports shirt, loafers and no socks. Thought I had returned to high school, when none of the cool guys wore socks. One by one the fans filed up, getting pictures, autographs, and chatting with him. If the sun had not been so radiant his smile would have shed even more of a glow. Every so often he would hold up signing and head to a wall where those in wheelchairs had been seated. He would stoop or kneel, chat and have his picture made with his adoring fans. So on one of these trips he jumped the wall, and kissed an elderly woman on the cheek. Nice gesture, however, unknown by him he tore the seat of his trousers. You can bet I didn't miss it. That Sat. I made it up to talk with him, have my picture snapped and away I went. Could barely hear what he was saying over some thump thump noise.
I knew I was going back Sunday for round two. Which I did sporting a brand new camcorder (bought for the sole purpose of catching his every move). Well, you never know, he could decide to jump another fence.
Sunday brought with it torrential rains, hoping this would thin the crowd, I headed to the back. Yuck as many if not more people than the day before, and this was 2 hours before his slotted time. Yet, there he stood, his tour guide told me he had been there for hours, and said if fans could stand in the rain to meet him, he could stay also.
Well, to finish up, I finally was the one standing next to him. Told him how today waited in the rain for him and the day before the burning sun. I also told him I had noticed his torn pants on Saturday, as I gave him a pinch, he laughed and said "yup right about there" He told me no-one had told him of his ripped pants, I asked if he thought we were crazy?
So it was a great weekend, and the more people I talked to I realized just what a special cast makes up the AMC family. I saw interviews with Susan Lucci ( Erica) where she spoke of her award, but mostly her real life family, was not hard to tell where her heart was. I along with thousands of others stood in the rain to see interviews with several AMC stars at once. When the technical operators told them they had to turn off the sound and cover the equipment, and the interview would be canceled. These stars said to the crowd "shout your questions we will stay and answer"
You might say yeah the least they can do? Perhaps, but they did it and willingly, with smiles. All I can say is their down to earthiness, their smiles, and fortitude, made a bigger fan from an already caught fish. They showed and have a lot of class. Way To Go Stars of All My Children!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My son often asked me what I would like on birthdays, and holidays, my answer was always the same...Tad. Seems some dreams do come true no matter how old you are, or how long you wait.
