If you are traveling east on I-10 in Florida, going toward Jacksonville, and you hear these words coming from the back seat, "Are we there yet? I'm hungry!" you know it's time to stop and eat. There are countless fast food places along I-10, but they do get to be, monotonous. Well, I know a secret! Not really a secret, as the place I'm going to tell you about is perhaps, the most popular place to eat in this small town. The town I am referring to is, about 25 miles west of Jacksonville, Florida. A small town, in every sense of the word. Macclenny, Florida, is a quaint little town, with many attributes.
You take exit 48 and, as in every other town, the first thing you see are the fast food places. I strongly suggest you pass them right on by. About a half a mile off the exit, there is a little restaurant named "Connie's". Located right across the street from Wal-Mart. When you walk through the front door, you instantly know what the feeling of 'down-home' means.
Connie's, is an exceptional restaurant, in that you are treated like you are the most important person in the place, not only by the staff, but also by Connie and her husband Joe. In fact, Joe makes it a point to personally stop by every table to make sure you are well taken care of. Aside from the ambiance of small town ( Southern ) hospitality, the food is great!
They are open at 6:00 a.m. for breakfast, and they serve a variety of early morning goodies. One of the favorites’ from the breakfast menu, is the ’Country Scrambler’. It consists’ of two homemade biscuits, topped with scrambled eggs and covered with sausage gravy. You know that you are in small town USA, when you see this breakfast menu: 2X4 ( two eggs, two pancakes, two sausages’, two pieces of bacon, and the usual grits (or hash-browns or home fries) and toast or biscuits.
The lunch menu is also very diverse. Home cooked macaroni and cheese, fresh vegetables, a choice of four different meats and choices of bread ( biscuits, corn bread, cracklin’ bread or rolls) and a very nice salad bar. One very popular item is the ’Connie’ burger. Big, juicy and cooked any way you want it! It comes with bacon and cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onion and fries. Better than Burger King or McDonalds, any day! There is also a soup ( always homemade )and sandwich special.
A menu for the kiddies is also available. With hot dogs’, grilled cheese sandwiches’, spaghetti, etc. Connie’s is open from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, with the exception of Friday night, when they have an all you can eat special. More than you can eat shrimp, catfish, or spaghetti, served with all the fixins’. You would not expect a small restaurant to have ‘good steaks’ but, let me tell you, they have good steaks!
If it’s down-home cookin’ and hospitality you are looking for, stop in and tell Connie or Joe, that Louise sent you!
